A quality exterior repaint in Melbourne lasts around 7-10 years when surfaces are properly washed, scraped, filled and primed before two topcoats. Cost depends on storeys, substrate and access — prep, not paint, drives the price. Tricoat Painting quotes after inspecting, and works through the October-April painting season.

What does it cost?

Exterior repaints in Melbourne commonly start in the low thousands for a single-storey weatherboard and rise well beyond for double-storey render, heavy prep or difficult access. Storeys, substrate, prep and scaffold drive the figure — we quote a fixed price after inspecting, not over the phone.

Exterior painting is mostly preparation. Pressure-washing, scraping, sanding to a sound substrate, treating any rust or rot, filling and priming — done properly, the topcoats are the easy bit. We use premium exterior systems matched to your substrate (weatherboard, render, brick, fibre-cement) so the finish actually lasts the years the paint manufacturer claims.

Why our exterior work lasts

Three things we do differently

Prep that handles Melbourne weather

Freeze-thaw cycles destroy paint that wasn't properly prepped. We scrape back to sound substrate, treat rust on metal, fill cracks in render, and prime every bare patch before topcoats touch a wall.

Premium exterior paint systems

Dulux Weathershield, Wattyl Solagard or equivalent, matched to your substrate. With the prep done right, these systems carry manufacturer product warranties of up to around 10 years — which is exactly why the prep matters.

Care for your garden, decks, paths

Drop sheets, taping, careful coverage of plants and outdoor furniture. We leave the place cleaner than we found it.

Why exterior prep is 80% of the job

Melbourne's weather is brutal on paint — hot, dry summers, damp winters, and big daily temperature swings that make coatings expand and contract until poorly-prepped paint lets go. That's why we spend most of an exterior job preparing: pressure-washing off dirt, mould and chalk, scraping and sanding every flaking edge back to something sound, treating rust on metal and rot in timber, filling and flexible-caulking gaps, and priming every bare patch. Skip those hours and the topcoat fails within a couple of years no matter how good the paint is. Do them properly and a two-coat finish holds for around 7-10 years.

The right system for your substrate

Weatherboard, render, brick and fibre-cement each need a different approach. Weatherboard wants careful caulking and gap-filling so water can't get behind the boards, then a flexible exterior acrylic. Render needs sound crack repair and a low-sheen membrane that breathes. Previously-unpainted brick needs a sealer-primer before any topcoat or it'll blotch and peel. Metal — gutters, fascias, downpipes, railings — needs rust treatment and the correct metal primer. We match the system to your surfaces rather than rolling one product over everything and hoping.

Timing exterior work around Melbourne's seasons

Exterior paint needs the right conditions to bond and cure — roughly 10°C to 30°C and below 70% humidity. That makes October to April the reliable window in Melbourne, with spring and autumn the sweet spot. We avoid painting through wet winter spells and extreme heat, both of which cause poor adhesion, blistering and patchy sheen. If your job lands in the cooler months, we plan around the weather and the forecast rather than rushing a coat on before rain and watching it fail.

Hiring a painter shouldn't be stressful

The usual worries about painters are real. Here's exactly how we remove each one.

The quote will balloon once they start

Our quote is fixed, itemised and GST-inclusive. Any change is priced and approved by you in writing before we proceed — never billed as a surprise at the end.

They'll take a deposit and disappear

We tie payments to progress, not to an upfront lump sum. Your money is never far ahead of the work — in line with Victoria's deposit rules.

The prep will be rushed and it'll peel within a year

A lasting job is mostly preparation. We scrape, sand, fill, caulk and prime before a drop of topcoat goes on — and back it with a written workmanship guarantee.

They'll leave a mess and damage things

We protect floors, furniture and fixtures, contain dust, and clean up at the end of every day. We leave your home the way we found it — only freshly painted.

I won't be able to reach anyone once they've started

You get one named point of contact from quote to final walk-through. We keep you posted daily and answer the phone — no black holes after the deposit.

They might not even be insured

We carry full public liability and workers' compensation cover, and we only put our own trained crew on your property — never unvetted casuals.

Questions, answered

Exterior painting — your questions answered

The things Melbourne homeowners ask us most about this work.

How much does it cost to paint the outside of a house?

Exterior cost depends heavily on size, number of storeys, substrate (render, weatherboard, brick), access and scaffold needs, and surface condition. As a Melbourne guide it commonly runs into the several thousands, with two-storey and high-prep jobs higher. We always quote after inspecting, because prep — not paint — drives the price.

What's the best time of year to paint outside in Melbourne?

Roughly October to April is ideal — moderate temperatures and lower humidity. Most exterior paints cure best between about 10°C and 30°C and below 70% humidity. We avoid wet winter spells and extreme heat, which cause poor adhesion and blistering. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot.

How long does an exterior paint job last?

A properly prepped, two-coat exterior in quality paint typically lasts around 7-10 years in Melbourne's climate, sometimes longer on protected elevations. Lifespan depends on prep quality, sun and weather exposure, and the product used. North- and west-facing walls weather fastest — good preparation is what makes the difference between five and ten-plus years.

Do you pressure-wash and prep before painting?

Always. Exterior prep includes washing off dirt, mould and chalking, scraping and sanding flaking paint, filling and caulking gaps, treating any rust or rot, and priming bare areas. This is the bulk of the labour and the reason a good job lasts. Skipping it is why cheap exterior jobs fail within a couple of years.

Can you paint render, weatherboard and brick?

Yes — we paint rendered, weatherboard, fibre-cement and brick exteriors, each with the appropriate primer and system. Weatherboard needs careful caulking and gap-filling; render needs the right low-sheen acrylic or membrane; previously unpainted brick needs a sealer-primer first. We match the product to your substrate rather than using one coat for everything.

My paint is peeling and flaking — can you fix it?

Yes. We scrape back all loose and failing paint, sand to a sound edge, spot-prime bare areas, then recoat. Peeling usually stems from moisture, poor original prep, or incompatible old coatings — we identify the cause so it doesn't return. We'll assess whether a full strip or a spot repair is the right call.
