Why weatherboard is all about the prep
Melbourne's weather is hard on timber — hot, dry summers, damp winters and big daily temperature swings make boards expand and contract until a poorly-prepped coating cracks and peels. That's why we spend most of a weatherboard job preparing, not painting: washing off dirt, mould and chalk, scraping and sanding flaking edges back to something sound, treating rot, caulking the gaps and priming bare patches. Skip those hours and the topcoat fails within a year or two. Do them properly and a quality two-coat exterior system holds for around seven to ten years between repaints.
Repairing the timber before a brush is lifted
Century-old and weather-beaten weatherboard moves, splits and rots, and painting over those problems only buys a season. We assess each elevation: sound boards are washed, scraped and sanded; split, cupped or rotten boards are repaired or replaced; and perished putty around timber-framed windows is raked out and renewed so water can't sit against the glass line. Where the carpentry is beyond a painter's scope we coordinate it before we prime, so the surface under your new paint is actually sound — not just hidden.
The right system, and the right time of year
Weatherboard wants a flexible exterior acrylic that moves with the timber — premium systems like Dulux Weathershield or Wattyl Solagard, matched to the boards and to any metal fascias, gutters and downpipes that need rust treatment and the correct primer. Timing matters too: exterior paint needs roughly 10-30°C and humidity below about 70% to bond and cure, which makes October to April the reliable window in Melbourne. If your job lands in the cooler months we plan around the forecast rather than coating over a damp wall and watching it fail.
